James Abbott Howell
A Funeral Service will be held for James Abbott Howell, 64, who died July 5, 2009 in Tampa Florida. The service for the long-time resident of Babylon and Oak Island will be held Sat., July11 at 11 a.m. at the Babylon Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Babylon Rural Cemetery.
Mr. Howell was born June 24, 1945 when his father was serving with the U.S. Army in France. He grew up in Babylon Village and spent many summers sailing his Thistle at the Babylon Yacht Club.
When his family moved to Connecticut, Jim graduated from Darien High School and the University of Bridgeport with a bachelor's degree in economics. After a tour in Germany with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict, Mr. Howell lived in New York city where he became vice president of Chemical Bank and represented the bank in Tokyo and Hong Kong for six years.
Mr. Howell is survived by his wife Gwen (Willey), formerly of South Orange, New Jersey, his mother Suzanne Abbott Howell, and his siblings, Betsy Hampton and her husband Donald of Meredith, New Hampshire, John Roders Howell II and his wife Marianne of Stony Brook; Susan Moore and her husband James of Athens, Georgia and Julie Hehir and her husband Brian of Jericho, Vermont. His father Elmer B. Howell Jr., predeceased him, as did his grandparents: Elmer B. Howell, Frances Rogers Howell, Frederic Bennett Abbott and Joy Adams Abbott.
The family has requested that contributions to the American Cancer Society be made in the name of James a. Howell.
